What is active ageing?

Active Ageing is about creating the environments and opportunities that enable people to be and do what they value throughout their later life. This approach supports engagement with communities, promotes physical activity and social engagement and therefore helps maintain health and well-being.

What is Active Ageing Research?

Active Ageing Research is a highly skilled, experienced and dedicated group of scientists and researchers. Their expertise spans exercise, health, ageing, behaviour change, nutrition, public health, statistics and health economics in order to provide holistic and credible approaches to the promotion of active ageing. The team’s goal is to spearhead world-leading research that provides practitioners and policymakers with the evidence, insight and framework to encourage older adults to remain healthy and active.

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the UK has 12.4 million people aged 65 and over. Currently, this is roughly 1 in 5 people and is projected to increase to 1 in 4 by 2050.

The importance of maintaining good health into and during older age is essential in order to

  • Maintain independence and quality of life

  • Reduce health care costs

  • Reduce social care costs

Active Ageing Research is a hub for research, thought leadership, education and discussion.
