Volunteer Information

We are looking for volunteers to support the participants in the ACE study to stay mobile and maintain their independence for longer.

Who can volunteer?

Who can volunteer?

Volunteers must be 55 years or older from the Stoke-on-Trent, Manchester or Cardiff and would need to volunteer to support one or two participants for 6 months.

What would be involved?

Your volunteering role would involve meeting a participant twice to get to know them and research local activities that they would like to try out. Together you will then attend the activities the participant chose. These can be anything from joining a strength and mobility class, walking group or choir to starting to knit and natter or trying out short mat bowls. After two months you will continue to support your participant to attend activities but mainly via phone calls.

How would I be supported?

As an ACE/ACTIF study volunteer, you will be supported and managed by our partner volunteering organisations (the Royal Voluntary Service in England and Sport Cardiff in Wales). Before you start working with the ACE study participants we will ask you to attend a one-day training course.

Providing feedback

At 6 and 18 months into the study we will ask some ACE study volunteers to tell us about their experiences of taking part in the ACE study with a view to making possible improvements. We would arrange for you to attend an interview or a small group to discuss this with 5 or 6 other ACE study volunteers. These interviews will be recorded. We may also record a few of the meetings between some participants and their volunteer. Some of the things people say in these meetings or interviews may be used when we write reports about the study. We will always anonymise these comments so volunteers and participants’ names will never be used if we use their quotations in our reports.
