REACT Interview

Natasha Johnson – REACT Group Leader

Why did you want to get involved in React?

Once the research team explained the purpose of REACT, in that it was going to prove the benefits of physical activity on a broader scale, meaning mentally, physically and emotionally to older populations, I was really interested. But when the team spoke about the drive to provide policymakers with really credible information to help secure funding in the future then I was in. The Concept of REACT, the reason we need REACT, all came together and I felt I could be part of the project to make a change. In the end, I like helping and these sessions really do make a difference to people. But being part of the REACT framework means I could have a wider impact.

Have you worked with other older adult exercise groups before?

I’ve delivered regular exercise sessions in care homes previously. It was great, that experience really helped me at the start of the REACT programme to jump straight into it. Older adult groups have always been amongst my favourite to work with because they are there every week, always on time, regular as clockwork which shows a level of enthusiasm and gratitude that is rewarding as a trainer.

What do you see as the main benefits of REACT versus other programmes or your previous experience?

The purpose of the REACT trial was to prove the benefit of regular physical activity and the impact of a social and educational element in maintaining that activity. I hope the main benefit will be around funding more groups like mine across the country. Something needs to change and I hope this can be a catalyst for that change. In terms of the benefits to the participants, of course, it’s the physical benefits to their health, but that then supports mental and emotional benefits as they are able to connect with people in the classes and share experiences together.

People often talk about the intangibles in terms of benefits, what would you say they were in your experience of REACT?

It’s not intangible, but I guess it sits outside of the usual list of physical benefits focused more on movement, stability and strength. One of the ladies in our group was able to stop using her antidepressants. Quite naturally, for people in this age group, social circles dwindle. This could be because people move to be near family, or need different levels of care etc.  I think it just shows the power of the mental and emotional benefits being part of a group can bring.

Chaps, in particular, seem to have fewer groups to attend so the structure of REACT can provide that missing social aspect that is so important to people. Sometimes even if people couldn’t get to the exercise class, because of a doctor’s appointment, for example, they would still try to come along afterwards for a cup of tea and a cake just to say hello to everyone.

Has REACT led to ongoing engagement among the group you worked with?

We had a group that went from the ten people that were part of the REACT trial, up to 18 people as friends were invited to come along and join. It became a fantastic social gathering as the new members were keen to come along and be part of the group that they had heard so much about during the previous year or so.

What were the highlights for you as an exercise leader?

It’s seeing the progression that I love. Helping people engage and get better increases their confidence. It becomes a virtuous circle, the better they get, the more confidence they have to try more and achieve more. It's brilliant, I love it.

What would you say to older adults thinking about joining a programme like REACT?

Just do it, come along and have a trial. People have been coming to classes for 4 years now. The relationships and benefits are so strong that during Covid, sessions were moved to Zoom and became a real event for people and a fantastic outlet to see friends. The common goal and mutual support mean it’s more than just a catch-up, people feel like they were part of something, supporting each other and doing something together.

What would you say to those in charge of supporting older adults in terms of the benefits of REACT?

If you have experience working with older adults then you will love it from day one. The addition of the social and educational elements gives you a chance to really get to know everyone and cement those relationships, which means, when you get the progression, it just means a bit more. Go ahead and do it, it's really rewarding.

And policy makers in charge of funding programmes like REACT?

We have proven the benefits beyond doubt. As I said before, something has to change, perhaps Covid has shone a light on the needs of different groups, but REACT is a fantastic way to look after the people that need to be looked after. This is a good thing, so definitely put your hand in your pocket…
