<image:title>Blog - Active Ageing Research - Although the rate of increase is slowing, life expectancy continues to rise. Children born between 2017 and 2019 can now presume to live until 79.4 years (men) and 83.1 years (women). Establishing healthy behaviours for this new long-life generation is of course important from an early age. Life expectance isn’t static, as people progress through life numerous factors will begin to have an impact. For those that reached 65 years of age between 2017-2019, current data shows they can expect to live for a further 18.8 years (men) and 21.1 years (women). The challenge and opportunity, therefore, is enabling the current population of older adults to remain fit and healthy well into their 7th, 8th, 9th or even 10th decades. Active Ageing Research (AAR) was formed to achieve just this. The group was established to bring together and drive collaboration amongst experts from universities and health institutions around the world. AAR is focused on supporting healthier, more active ageing to help mobility, preserve independence and maintain a good quality of life. This is achieved via the use of physical activity and social programmes designed to support behaviour change across a spectrum of abilities. The AAR cohort has been responsible for numerous projects, with thousands of older adults participating in programmes aimed at supporting improved and prolonged independence. The latest programme from AAR is REACT (REtirement in ACTion) and is spearheaded by Dr Afroditi Stathi. This groundbreaking research, which is funded by the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR), includes experts based at the Universities of Birmingham, Bath, Bristol and Exeter. The team also contains collaborators from America as REACT builds on previous work from the Lifestyle Interventions and Independence of Elders (LIFE) study which was based in the USA. REACT is a community programme that combines exercise, education and social activities designed for older adults starting to show age-related mobility declines. The research that underpins REACT took place over a four-and-a-half-year period and involved 777 participants aged between 65 and 98. The aim was to help people establish positive behaviours in terms of regular and beneficial activity. This was hopefully achieved via a combination of group-based exercise and a health maintenance programme that included education and social activities</image:title>

<image:caption>The cost effectiveness of REACT was evaluated by the Health Economics team at the University of Exeter. They found that Not only did the REACT intervention deliver enhanced mobility, but it also proved to be cost effective means of delivering such health benefits. The average reduction in health care costs was £725 per person. It all begins with an idea. Thanks to the impact of increased activity amongst REACT participants, more cost savings are predicted in the long term.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The REACT intervention was delivered in three key stages over a 12 month timeframe. The first two months consisted of two activity sessions per week followed by social time. Then the programme moved onto the Build Up phase. Build Up had an inial month within which two activity sessions were maintained. however, now one of those sessions was followed by social time, the other by a social and educational session promoting the value and importance of activity. As Build Up progressed into months four, five and six, activity sessions were dropped to once a week which was followed by social and educational sessions. The final phase, Taking Control, took place between months seven and twelve. Activity sessions dropped to once a month. These were followed by social sessions encouraging participants to seek additional independent activity.</image:caption>

<image:title>Participants Information - What will I need to do to take part?</image:title>
<image:caption>If you take part in the ACE study, we will ask you to do: Wear a small movement monitor (similar size and shape to a watch) on your wrist for 16 days so we can measure how active you are. Spend some time with us talking about your everyday life, your health and your wellbeing. Measure your height, weight and grip strength Complete three physical function tests: Walking for just 4 metres, some balance tests, and sitting in a chair then standing up. These tests are called the Short Physical Performance Battery or SPPB tests. We will ask you to repeat these tasks three times, at the beginning of the study, again at 6 months and for the last time at 18 months. After 12 months we will send you a short questionnaire to complete at home and a movement monitor to wear. Where will all of this happen? In order to carry out these measures, our researcher would meet you in a local community centre. If you need it, we can arrange for transport to get you there. Before we do anything, we would ask you to complete a consent form with our researchers so that you know exactly what we are asking you to do and you can confirm if you are happy to go ahead. You will then complete the simple physical function tests and we will show you how to wear the movement monitor and go through the questions with you. We will give you an envelope so that you can send the monitor back to us after a week.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Volunteer Information - Who can volunteer?</image:title>
<image:caption>Who can volunteer? Volunteers must be 55 years or older from the Stoke-on-Trent, Manchester or Cardiff and would need to volunteer to support one or two participants for 6 months. What would be involved? Your volunteering role would involve meeting a participant twice to get to know them and research local activities that they would like to try out. Together you will then attend the activities the participant chose. These can be anything from joining a strength and mobility class, walking group or choir to starting to knit and natter or trying out short mat bowls. After two months you will continue to support your participant to attend activities but mainly via phone calls. How would I be supported? As an ACE/ACTIF study volunteer, you will be supported and managed by our partner volunteering organisations (the Royal Voluntary Service in England and Sport Cardiff in Wales). Before you start working with the ACE study participants we will ask you to attend a one-day training course.</image:caption>

      <image:title>REACT Results - Mobility.</image:title>
<image:caption>People that took part in the REACT intervention reported better mobility through the study. This most importantly included the final assessment which took place 24 months after the programme had started, 12 months after REACT sessions had finished. Within this 12 month period participants had been encouraged to seek self-led activities.</image:caption>

      <image:title>REACT Results - Cost effective.</image:title>
<image:caption>Not only did the REACT intervention deliver enhanced mobility, it also proved to be cost effective means of delivering such health benefits. The average reduction in health care costs was £725 per person. It all begins with an idea. Thanks to the impact of increased activity amongst REACT participants, more cost savings are predicted in the long term.</image:caption>
